Tiago sent me the 2024 Tea Encounter YiShanMo Gushu (approx $160 for 250g cake or $0.64/g) sometime this past Autumn/ Winter and I have been eagerly anticipating trying it when the weather got hot and when the first heatwave of the year hit, I had it in my pot…. But before I did that I sampled Tea Encounter’s 2023 YiShanMo ($83.00 for 200g cake or $0.41/g) first and did a comparison here…. Hahaha….
2023 Tea Encounter Yi Shan Mo
Dry leaves have a very sweet sugar and floral with a faint forestry not quite barnyard but complex high and low odours.
Rinsed leaves have deep forest slight barnyard even less sweet smell.
First infusion has a clear pure forest taste with barnyard Forest nuances as the min taste with a faint sweetness hard to grasp underneath. Lingering sweet lime on the breath.
Second has a sweet pure watery clear taste with a barnyard forest base and lime then barnyard forest sweet breath. An airy evolution of taste here.
Third left to cool and is a sweet light watery with deeper barn yard forest taste long profile of elegant airy taste. Very light in the body Qi… light chest and limbs feeling.
Fourth has a buttery sweet floral faint oily textured mouthwatering taste. Nice and oily wet mouth long taste profile is gentle. Soothing light in body qi. Chest and limbs floating mild and gentle Qi. Long sweet limes fresh fruity breath with faint barnyard forest breath.
5th is a sweet pure fruity onset with faint barnyard forest base long lime and barnyard faint sweet finish. Lots of subtle complexity. No bitterness nor astringency smooth and satisfying. Cooled down it is more buttery sweet with nice oily wet texture. Light limbs and chest.
6th is an oily viscus texture mouthfeel with a buttery sweet taste soft evolving sweet tastes of pear and maybe peach…. Mainly pear… light feeling in the body… light limbs. Cooled down it is pear sweet water with mild oily textured mouthwatering taste and chalky sweet forest finish.
7th has a watery buttery oily textured mouthwatering taste with soft transition& to sweet aftertaste mild forest taste. Light airy Qi feeling.
8th is a watery almost woody sweetness it’s becoming a bit insipid with still an airy light limbs qi.
9th is an overnight thermos steeping… it has a smooth watery oily sweet taste chalky feeling underneath no bitterness or astringency at all this session including here in the long steep…
10th day later steeping is oily sweet long fresh chalky oily viscus texture pure sweet vibrant. Long fresh candy melon…
2024 Tea Encounter Yi Shan Mo Gushu
Dry leaves have a very sweet almost candy odour to them subtle deep forest odours.
Rinsed leaves sweet forest odours.
First infusion is a fresh sweet oily watery mouthwatering taste. So fresh and vibrant with an evolution oily sweet profile and a lime fresh candy aftertaste. Vibrant and bright and sparkling vibrancy.
Second infusion has a banana and tropical fruity taste smooth evolution of sweet taste. Long candy tropical fruity finish. Clear flavours with a subtle faint forest taste throughout no astringency or bitterness at all fluffy mouthfeel with some oily textured mouthwatering taste.
Third infusion has a very sweet candy buttery vibrant pop of taste. Smooth creamy buttery feeling and taste with edges of melon and green grapes. Vibrant pops of sweet tastes. Light chest and mild qi feeling. Mouthwatering candy breath. Faint sticky mouth.
Fourth is a sweet pop of delicious tastes fruity with a moderately thick chalky mouthfeel. Long almost melon sweet tastes they turns to candy on the mouth. Face qi is evident now. Salivating mouthfeel. Light limbs heavy shoulders.
5th is a sour sweet almost floral chalky and melon sweet taste with forest chalky woody base and almost turn to candy woody melon finish. The qi is mild with heavy shoulders and light limbs. A sticky mouthfeeling.
6th is a sweet oily fruity taste with creamy buttery taste. Some pops of melon and some slight dirt… faint chest flutters and some mild face I and shoulders heavy.
7th is a sweet slight pungent sweet forestry woody sweet taste. Some chest flutters and beats with energy mild uplift and mind scatter. Cooled down it is a bit more melon sweet with candy and lime aftertaste. Heavy shoulders and light qi to limbs.
8th left to cool is a woody slight sour slight sweet smooth chalky a bit oily watery some deep energy buildup with this one…. It gives me energy but never astringent nor bitter at all
9th is a long thermos steeping comes out moderately bitter and woody deeper uplifting moderate energy.
Days long infusion is oily viscus with a woody Forest base taste with slight bitterness woody.
2023 vs 2024 I liked the 2023 Tea Encounter YiShanMo considerably more. For its unwavering long evolution of sweetnesses, light airy Qi, and absolutely no signs of bitter astringency. Purity. It would be nice to revisit the 2024 as it thickens in a year or two.
